Today is Bandcamp Friday.
This is an all-important time of the year when the platform waives its revenue share, which means 100% of every purchase goes directly to the artists
and labels behind the music. Since Bandcamp Friday began in 2020,
the initiative has helped fans put more than $120 million
directly into the hands of musicians and labels.
For independent music, this is a huge support. Buying a record, or any other physical product is a tangible way of supporting the people and labels continuing to make, release and preserve the music you love.
To mark this month's Bandcamp Friday, we've pulled together 18
releases, spanning foundational Detroit techno and electro,
contemporary interpretations of the sound and a new
generation of artists carrying the lineage forward.
Metroplex has been at the heart of Detroit's electronic music DNA since Juan Atkins established the label in the mid 1980s, while Elypsia represents a
newer generation of releases connected to those roots - bringing established
names and emerging artists into the same conversation.
So whether you're looking to revisit some essential sounds or
discover something new, we've picked out a selection of
records that are essential for your collection:
CEM3340 & 2030 - MACHINES AWAKE EP
[M-052]

Italian producers CEM3340 & 2030 debuted on Metroplex with Machines Awake, a five-track journey through razor-sharp electro, deep atmospheres and driving rhythms. Recorded at their headquarters in Bari, the EP draws on the classic foundations of the genre while pushing them into distinctly contemporary territory - a natural fit for Metroplex's forward-thinking tradition.
MODEL 500 - CLASSICS VOL. 2
[MLP-226]

The second deep dive into Juan Atkins' Model 500 archive follows the acclaimed first Classics collection, this time exploring some of the project's harder, more club-focused material alongside its more experimental side. From the head-knocking kicks and laser synths of “Jazz Is The Teacher” to the slow, sensual funk of “Ocean 2 Ocean”, it's another reminder of the remarkable range of Model 500 and his pioneering sound.
AUGUSTUS WILLIAMS - INCREASER EP
[M-049]

Augustus Williams is part of a new generation of Detroit electro and techno artists carrying the Metroplex sound forward. His debut Increaser EP delivers four tracks of celestial funk, deep techno-soul and futuristic machine music, from the propulsive bassline and bubbling synths of “The Hook-Up” to the more abstract textures of “Submission”. A strong introduction to an artist now firmly within the Metroplex family.
Four decades of Detroit futurism, from
foundational releases to contemporary interpretations.
